An unsolicited redesign of Malaysia's biggest forum. 81 million posts and 944,000 members live on an interface built for a 1024×768 monitor, and this is my attempt at moving the furniture without chasing the regulars out of the house.

Summary
I've been reading this forum since I was a teenager looking up motherboard prices. It is still, in 2026, where you go when you want a Malaysian who actually knows the answer, about a warranty, a landlord, a broken Astro box, a used lens. That accumulated knowledge is the asset. The interface is the tax you pay to reach it.
So I gave myself three constraints: fix the mobile experience, fix navigation and density, and make moderation and thread quality visible, without turning the place into a soft, airy social app. The regulars didn't stay 20 years because it was pretty. They stayed because it is fast, dense, and honest.
The result: nine top-level categories collapse into three lanes, the thread list starts carrying signal instead of counters, and every moderation action becomes something you can see and appeal. Density stays high, it just gets ranked.
02 · 81 million posts
Background
A national archive that looks like a mailing list
The board runs the classic 2000s forum pattern: category → subforum → paginated thread list → paginated posts. It has survived Facebook groups, WhatsApp, Reddit and TikTok, which tells you the content is worth the friction. But the friction is real, and it lands hardest on phones, where most of the traffic now is.
81M+
posts on the board, two decades of answers nobody has indexed properly
944K
registered members, a large share of them dormant lurkers who still read daily
9
top-level categories, over a hundred subforums beneath them
3

03 · two weeks of notes
What's Actually Broken
I ran a plain heuristic pass on my own phone over two weeks of normal reading. No lab, no participants, just notes every time I got annoyed. Three clusters came out of it, and they map exactly onto what I set out to fix.
Problem 01 · Mobile
A desktop table squeezed onto a 390px screen. Pagination controls smaller than a fingertip. Reply is a round trip to another page. Reading a 400-page thread means guessing which page number you left off at.
Cost: the phone majority reads but rarely posts.
Problem 02 · Density & nav
Density itself is fine, the ranking is missing. Every row shows the same four counters, none of which tell you whether the thread is worth opening. Getting between two subforums means going back to the top of the tree.
Cost: people camp in one subforum and never see the rest.
Problem 03 · Quality & moderation
Moderation is invisible until it lands on you. Rules live in a sticky post nobody reads, removals appear as gaps, and a thread's health is something you infer from the tone of the last three pages.
Cost: mods look arbitrary, and good threads rot unnoticed.
04 · so i can say no
Four Rules I Gave Myself
1
Rank density, don't remove it. A screen may stay full. It may not stay flat.
2
Every number must change a decision. If a counter doesn't help you decide whether to tap, it goes.
3
Moderation in the open. Removals, locks and warnings are shown, explained, and appealable, in place.
4
Reward the veterans, don't gate the newcomers. Twenty years of post history should buy visible standing, not private privilege.
05 · nothing deleted
IA: Nine Categories Become Three Lanes
The nine top-level categories are a filing cabinet, not a mental model. In practice people come for one of three reasons: to solve something technical, to talk to Malaysians, or to buy and sell. So the top level becomes three lanes, colour-coded, and every subforum keeps its name one level down. Nothing is deleted, the tree is re-parented.

Trade

Lane → thread. Section is a filter, not a floor.
The three lanes need different rules, and that's the point. Trade needs identity and trust. Talk needs moderation. Tech needs archival search. One generic forum shell has been serving all three badly for twenty years.
06 · live html, not png
The Screens
Seven screens, drawn at both ends: the phone first, then the desktop that power users actually keep open all day. The mockups below are live HTML, not images, and the type inside them is a UI sans on purpose, so you can tell my portfolio's voice apart from the product's.
5.1 Forum index, desktop
The index stops being a directory of boards and becomes a feed of live conversation, with the board directory available as a filter rail. Three lanes across the top, one row per thread, and the right rail carries the two things regulars check anyway: what's moving, and what the mods just did.

Index, desktop. Same information per screen as today, reordered so the first glance answers "is anything worth my time right now?"
1 · One line of live context. The last post's first clause beats "214 replies" for deciding whether to open a thread.
2 · The board tree becomes a personal rail. Subforums still exist, they just stop being the front door.
3 · The mod log is public and on the homepage. Enforcement seen daily reads as fairness, not surveillance.
5.2 Index & thread list, mobile
On the phone the same rows lose one meta line and gain a tap target. Lanes become a top pill row, sections become a filter sheet, and posting moves to a persistent bottom bar. The single biggest reason mobile lurkers don't reply is that replying is buried.

Left: the lane feed. Right: a section, with filters where pagination used to be.
1 · "Jump to first unread" replaces page numbers. Nobody remembers they were on page 37. The system does.
Locked threads stay visible with the reason and an appeal link attached, instead of vanishing.
"Ask this section" sits at the bottom of the list, the moment intent is highest, not hidden in a header.
5.3 Thread view & reply
The hardest screen. A thread here can be 1,284 replies long and still contain three facts worth knowing. So the thread opens with a settled summary, community-written, mod-edited, versioned, and a health strip that says out loud what moderation has been doing. Replying happens in a sheet on top of the thread, never on another page.

Node congestion confirmed by TIME on 09.08, Bandar Puteri area.
Speedtest to the local server is not affected, use an overseas server.
Escalation template that worked is in post #41.

Ticket escalated to their NOC. They admitted node congestion in Bandar Puteri and gave a fix window of 14 days. Template I used is in #41, attach your speedtest at 3 different hours, that's what stopped the auto-close.

Same here in Bandar Puteri. Attaching my three speedtests, 3pm, 9pm, 1am.
Three people already posted speedtests. Adding yours to the settled summary helps more than a new reply, do that instead?3
Add to summaryPost reply
Thread view with the settled summary and health strip, reply as a sheet with a gentle "does this need to be a post?" nudge.
1 · The summary is a wiki, not an AI verdict. Members write it, mods edit it, everyone can read the diff. Twenty years of goodwill says they'll do it well.
2 · Health strip over hidden enforcement. A removed post leaves a labelled gap with the reason and the mod's name.
3 · Redirect, don't block. The nudge offers a better place for the contribution, and "Post reply" is still right there.
5.4 Search that admits the archive exists
Twenty years of answers are unreachable because search returns posts, not conclusions. So results group by thread, surface the accepted answer first, and let you filter by the things people actually qualify on: lane, section, year, whether it was solved, whether the author is a verified seller.

Nothing fits? Ask in Broadband & ISP, your search becomes the draft title.
Why this ordering
A forum search that returns 4,000 posts sorted by date is a punishment. Sorting by resolution first assumes what people want: the answer, then the live thread, then the archive.
The last row matters most. A failed search is the best possible moment to start a new thread, pre-titled with what you were looking for.
Search results grouped by thread, accepted answers hoisted to the top.
5.5 Trade Zone: listing + seller
Trade is where the trust the community already has gets converted into money, and where it gets burnt. The listing separates the item from the person, and gives the person a record that took years to build and one bad deal to dent.

Listing and seller profile. The trust panel is the product, the photo is just the bait.
1 · Trust before price. The seller block sits above the fold with numbers that can't be faked in a week.
2 · Say the scam rate out loud. Hiding it protects nobody, publishing it makes the safe behaviour the obvious one.
3 · "Known for" is earned reputation, computed from where a member's posts were marked helpful, not a badge someone bought.
4 · Your own moderation record is public to you and summarised to others. Same rule for everyone, mods included.
07 · no downvotes
The Quality System Behind the Screens
Every quality feature above runs on one small model, deliberately without a downvote. Downvotes on a forum this old become factional weapons within a month. Instead, three signals: one positive, one evidentiary, one protective, and every one of them is attributable.
Helpful
Feeds "Known for" and sorts long threads. Weighted by the giver's own standing so ten new accounts can't manufacture an expert.
Source
Attaches a receipt to a claim: a price list, a spec sheet, a screenshot. Threads with sources rank higher in search.
Report
Goes to a queue with a visible SLA. The reporter sees the outcome. Bad-faith reporting costs you standing too.
Slow mode instead of the lock
A heated Kopitiam thread today has two states: open, or locked and dead. I'd add a middle one, slow mode, one post per member per minute, applied automatically when report rate spikes, announced in the thread with the reason. Most flare-ups burn out in twenty minutes. Locking a 1,200-reply thread to solve twenty minutes is a bad trade.
Veterans get tools, not immunity
Long-standing members with clean records can mark an accepted answer, edit the settled summary, and second a report. Real leverage over quality. What they don't get is a different rulebook. The status is visible, the powers are listed publicly, and both are revocable.
08 · what i don't know
What I'd Test Before Shipping Any of It
This is a concept study, so the honest part of it is the list of things I don't know. If someone handed me the real forum tomorrow, this is the order I'd find out in:
Does the three-lane model survive contact with regulars? A card sort with 12 long-time members, half of them Trade Zone people. If Kopitiam refuses to be "Talk", the lane names are wrong, not the members.
Does the settled summary get written, or rot? Ship it in three sections for a month. If fewer than one thread in ten gets a summary, the feature is a fantasy and the thread view goes back to plain.
Does "Helpful" get gamed? Watch the weighting for a quarter before letting it feed search ranking.
Does public moderation reduce appeals, or invite arguments? Measure appeal volume and mod burnout. This is the change most likely to backfire.
Does density-by-default hold? Compact is the default here. If new members bounce, the toggle's default flips by account age instead of a global decision.
